McDonald’s “secret” Empire
You probably think McDonald’s is all about Big Macs and fries, right? Well, what if I told you its secret sauce is actually in real estate? Behind the golden arches lies one of the world’s largest real estate companies.
While you may know McDonald’s for its burgers, it’s the company’s ownership of valuable land and leasing it to franchisees that generates a significant portion of its revenue.
In fact, in 2023, McDonald’s raked in around $9.5 billion from rental income, contributing to 36% of its total revenue, a strategy that former CFO Harry Sonneborn implemented and summarised: “We are not in the food business; we are in the real estate business.”
But Microstrategy Is A Software Company?
Let’s have a look at MicroStrategy now. This enterprise software company has adopted a similar approach but with Bitcoin. Since 2020, under Michael Saylor’s leadership, MicroStrategy has acquired over 244,800 BTC, viewing it as a digital form of property.
Just as McDonald’s real estate appreciates over time, MicroStrategy believes Bitcoin will act as a hedge against inflation and grow in value.
Build Yourself A Moat
Both companies share a strategy of building “moats”, assets that protect and strengthen their businesses over the long term. McDonald’s uses physical land, while MicroStrategy banks on the finite nature of Bitcoin.
Regardless of economic shifts, these assets provide stability and growth opportunities.
As Saylor says: “You should always try to build something to last 100 years, not 10 years.”
Both companies understand one key principle: true wealth isn’t just about immediate gains, it’s about protecting value over the long haul.
Whether it’s land or digital property like Bitcoin, building a moat around your wealth means playing the long game and investing in assets that are able to stand the test of time.
